Along Main Street, you'll find a large antique store, an antique mall, an old timey general store, a coffee shop, a home décor retail store, and an art gallery, all packed with unusual, interesting finds. Why, you can even buy handmade craft items created right here in downtown Mt. Gilead. Combine your shopping trip with lunch, and you've got a nice afternoon outing!

Mt. Gilead

Some towns wear their history in a museum. Mount Gilead wears it on Main Street.

The Mount Gilead Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it shows in every storefront - Romanesque Revival and Early Commercial architecture built from sandstone and slate quarried right here in the Piedmont. Walking these blocks feels like stepping into another century, except this one comes with better shopping.

And what shopping it is. Mount Gilead has quietly become a destination for antiques and vintage hunters, with a downtown packed tighter with treasure than towns twice its size. Start at the Mt. Gilead Antiques Mall, where an old sock mill has been reborn into room after room of finds. Head to Town Creek Antiques for a variety of antique and vintage finds worth digging through.

Keep going at Arrowhead Estates & Liquidation, the go-to for antique furniture and glass. At Memory Lane Collective, antiques and vintage collectibles mix with upcycled and newclothing. And Thrifty Pickle rounds out the hunt with great vintage clothing finds and everyday sundries.

Need a break from the hunt? Curl up with a new find at Trilogy Books, Wine & Tea, downtown's independent bookstore, then walk it off with a cup from Sacred Grounds, where every coffee sold helps fund something good in the community. Grab a handmade gift or custom frame at Frames on Main, break in a new pair of boots at Gilead Mercantile, or pick up fresh flowers at Mount Gilead Florist.

Hungry? Main Street feeds you as well as it entertains you: fried chicken at Burger Shack, home cooking at Roni's Kitchen, seafood at Ocean Bite, pizza at Luna's Pizza & Restaurant, tucked inside the town's beautifully restored old Ford dealership, or burgers at Steve's Pizza & Pasta. Prefer to cook your own catch? Papa Giant's Fresh Seafood Market has you covered.

Come for the history. Stay for the hunt. Leave with a trunk full of treasures.
